DeMille, Cecil B. Cleopatra. 1934. Film Poster.

One of my favorite things given to us by art and culture is film. Film in this generation can represent anything or any idea. Immediately when I think of films inspired by ancient Greece and Rome I think of 1934s Cleopatra starring Cecil B. DeMille. Our current knowledge of cleopatra is sponsored by years of new developments in technology. In 1934 however our knowledge of cleopatra was scanty. The resources used to make that movie were taken directly from ancient artifacts, hieroglyphs, and some limited studies of ancient egypt. I would consider a film adaptation of Cleopatra’s life a more obvious offshoot of using our knowledge of ancient Egypt in today’s world. Historical Greek and Egyptian stories are told on scream today, some staying true to historic culture and some deviating.

Another very interesting way we are seeing classical antiquity affecting art and culture is through fashion.  8th century BC and 6th century AD art has prevailed through the tests of time. Most exclusively renaissance art. Renaissance art has been so appropriated in the world of fashion. These famous images are pasted onto boots, corsets, t-shirts, and more. Wearing renaissance on your clothing has only recently grown fashionable as a wave of fast-fashion swept the nation. I think that this sort of appropriation may seem too much to some but I think what is more true is that this imagery is just simply loved by many. Perhaps even the continuation of garments like this will promote interest in renaissance art. Some say this is exploitative and not honoring the renaissance era, which is also a valid point. Artists and creators take these images and just paste them onto clothing, which typically means stealing art. As the rise in interest in this apparel grows I’m sure we will hear more opinions on whether this is ok or not.
